Virtual in Proximity project made possible in part by a grant from the County of Santa Clara’s Historic Grant Program.
Welcome to PAC*SJ’s Virtual in Proximity (ViP) tour of the historic Temple Laundry/IBM buildings in San Jose, California.
Welcome to PAC*SJ’s ViP tour of three buildings used by four different occupants over the past century including a labor movement inspired Temple Laundry starting in 1918, the US Army after the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, New York based IBM’s for its first west coast manufacturing plant in 1943 and eventually San Jose Hospital which grew all around these buildings starting in 1923.
You will see how the use of punch cards automated everything from material looms in the early 1800’s to record keeping and tabulation starting with the 1890 U.S. Census, and how this drove demand for a massive number of punch cards by businesses and governments. IBM's decision to build a punch card plant in these buildings contributed heavily to the company’s decision to seed its first west coast research facility in downtown San Jose. It was at that facility that IBM's young engineers tackled the issue of how to better access and use massive amounts of data that lead to the creation of the world’s first random access hard disc drive.
This all transpired in a place covered with fruit trees, once described as the Valley of the Heart's Delight by John Muir, as it was transforming into what is now widely known as Silicon Valley.
